HISTORY
The Bellville Athletics Club has its roots in the Parow Athletics and Cycling club, founded in 1933 and renamed Bellville Athletics and Cycling Club in 1938. In 1958, the Athletics and Cycling arms parted ways and Bellville Athletics Club became autonomous.
Originally the club catered mostly for Track and Field Athletics, but the popularity of Road Running grew and in 1982, the Club decided to split the management into two separate committees (track & field and road running). Together the two committees constitute the Bellville Athletics Club.
The Bellville Athletics Club has a proud heritage and the list of members who have represented South Africa includes Ewald Bonzet, Terence Brown, Heidi de Kock, Desire du Plessis, Marilize Engelbrecht, Thea Kitshoff, Marcus la Grange, Esmari le Roux, Tanya Peckham, Bobang Phiri, Cornelius Uys, Adri van der Merwe, Chantelle Terblanche, Marius Hugo-Schlechter, John van Reenen, Esther Brand, Hennie Kotze, Elana van Zyl and Marius van Heerden, to name but an absolute few. Our current senior world-class athletes are Antonio Alkana and Rocco van Rooyen. We also have a long list of junior athletes coming up through the ranks to become a future track and field stars.
Our coaches continue to produce and our athletes continue to perform at the highest level, contributing the most athletes to the various WPA teams and many athletes to different ASA teams to compete internationally. Two of our coaches are internationally qualified by the IAAF, whilst all other coaches are qualified by ASA.
